I agree with you that peope only theive because they are after the adrenalin rush that goes along with it. Also after a while they might begin to get addicted to the rush of adrenalin at the thought of getting caught or not from wherever they have just stolen items.
I also think that you have a point about it been seen as different to other crimes as some crimes may be seen
more seriously thatn what shoplifting may be seen by some.
